General information on higher education
Icelandic higher education institutions (HEI) operate under the law 63/2006 on universities and 85/2008 on public universities.

National external quality assurance requirements
The Minister of Education, Science and Culture grants accreditation to HEI that fulfil the criteria laid down in national legislation as well as internationally accepted criteria. The external quality assurance is run by the Quality Board for Icelandic Higher Education according to the Quality Enhancement Framework.

Subject-Level Reviews
Within each cycle, all institutions are required to conduct reviews covering each of their subject areas. -
Institution Wide Reviews
All institutions go through an institution-wide review within a seven year cycle. The focus of the reviews is on the effectiveness of the institution’s arrangements for quality and research.

Cross-border quality assurance
In Iceland higher education institutions may not choose among EQAR-registered agencies.
