  • General information on higher education

    Public universities (University of Cyprus, Open University of Cyprus, Cyprus University of Technology) are academically autonomous entities and are not required to undergo periodic external quality assurance.

  • National external quality assurance requirements

    Private universities must be evaluated every five years at institutional, programme and departmental level. 

    • External programmatic evaluation and accreditation
      of a public university, of a licensed private university and of a public tertiary education institutions is carried out (every five years)

    • Evaluation and accreditation of a study programme
      of a private tertiary education institution or a private university operating under an initial licence (every five years)

    • Departmental Evaluation
      of an academic department of a public or private university which includes elements of the Programmatic Evaluation (every five years)

    • Institutional evaluation
      for private and public universities and tertiary education institutions (every five years)

  • Cross-border quality assurance

    In Cyprus higher education institutions may choose a suitable EQAR-registered agency.

    Public higher education institutions may choose an external QA agency for programme or institutional evaluation. 

    Private higher education institutions need to first be accredited (licencing procedure) by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education.

    • Eligibility requirements for foreign agencies: EQAR registration otherwise prior consent needs to be obtained from the Cyprus QA agency.

    • Conditions for the agencies’ work (e.g. criteria to be used): (e.g. criteria to be used): own criteria

    • Recognition of reviews carried out by foreign agencies: final decision is to be taken by the Cypriot Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education based on the outcomes of the external QA activity carried out by the EQAR-registered agency.

  • European Approach for Quality Assurance of Joint Programmes

    In Cyprus the European Approach is available to higher education institutions under certain conditions.

    Public universities: yes (due to “self-accrediting” status of their programmes they are able to employ the European Approach).

    Private higher education institutions may use the European Approach once they have been accredited (licencing procedure) by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education.
