General information on higher education
The higher education institutions in Greece include universities, polytechnics, the School of Fine Arts and the School of Pedagogical and Technological Education.
In Higher Education, quality assurance is regulated by virtue of Law 4653/2020, which determines the framework and the specific processes of internal and external evaluation in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

National external quality assurance requirements
A decision granting permissions to operate is required for all higher education institutions.
On the basis of predetermined criteria higher education have to undergo an evaluation on the quality of the programmes of studies or of the internal quality assurance system of the institution.

Programme accreditation
The validity of the accreditation decision cannot exceed a period of six years. -

Cross-border quality assurance
In Greece under certain conditions higher education institutions may choose a suitable EQAR-registered agency.
The evaluation on the quality of the programmes of studies or of the internal quality assurance system of the institution may be replaced by the evaluation/certification carried out by of a fore quality assurance agency which is internationally recognized (see Law 4653/2020 on the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education, article 12, paragraph 8).
