Information on the agency's work

NOKUT was established by the U&C Act in 2002 and became operative by 1 January 2003. The act lists NOKUT's main tasks and empowers the agency as the only official quality assurance agency for Norwegian higher education. NOKUT's mission is to contribute towards trust in quality both in higher education, vocational education at tertiary level and in recognised foreign higher education. This is done both by quality assurance and through analysis and development activities.

External quality assurance activities in the scope of the ESG: NOKUT's external quality assurance activities in higher education include:
- Institutional accreditation: ex ante process focused on determining an institutional status and granting the associated degree-awarding powers;
- Programme accreditation: initial approval of a new study programme in areas for which the institution does not have degree-awarding power;
- Institutional audit: cyclical evaluation of the effectiveness of internal quality assurance systems.
- Revisions of accreditation (institutional and programme): initiated on an ad-hoc basis to control the institution’s or programme’s continuous adherence to the accreditation criteria.
ENQA membership: Full member
